Retail software security compliance, layer by layer

Good retail software has to protect your transactions, stock records and customer data on every channel. Retail Clouds secures its cloud platform in seven layers, so a gap in one is covered by the others.

The seven layers at a glance

Cloud security is a shared effort. Some layers belong to the cloud operator, some to the software provider and some to you. Knowing who owns each layer is the first step to asking the right questions before you sign.

What each layer protects

1. Cloud security

Provided by the cloud operator

The foundation. The cloud operator secures the physical data centres, the network and the core infrastructure that everything else runs on.

  • Physical protection of data centres, including controlled access and environmental safeguards.
  • Network-level defences and isolation between customers.
  • Redundant infrastructure that keeps services available when hardware fails.

Retail Clouds builds on this foundation and adds its own protections on top.

2. Operating system security

Servers that run your retail software

Every server runs an operating system, and an unpatched or loosely configured one is an easy way in. This layer keeps the servers themselves hardened.

  • Regular security patches and updates.
  • Unused services and ports switched off, so there is less to attack.
  • Restricted administrative accounts and controlled remote access.

3. Web server and application server security

The gateway between users and your data

Web and application servers handle every request from outlets, warehouses, the eCommerce site and the mobile app. Securing them means securing every channel at once.

  • SSL-enabled connections, so data is encrypted in transit across every channel and device.
  • Secure server configuration that limits what outsiders can see or reach.
  • Request filtering and limits that guard against common web attacks.

4. End application security

The retail software itself

The application is where billing, stock and customer data are actually handled. Security here is built into how the software is written and tested.

  • VAPT certification: independent vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, not a self-declared claim.
  • Input validation and secure handling of sensitive data.
  • Offline operation, so warehouses and outlets keep billing and moving stock when the internet drops, with data syncing safely afterwards.
  • Real-time replication and backup to a live standby server, so a failure is an inconvenience rather than a lost day of trade.

5. Access control

Shared between Retail Clouds and your business

Most retail data problems start with the wrong person having the wrong access. Access control makes sure each person sees and does only what their job needs.

  • Role-based permissions for cashiers, store managers, warehouse staff and head office.
  • Separate access for outlets, warehouses and franchise locations.
  • Sign-in controls, and prompt removal of access when someone leaves.

You decide who gets which role. The platform enforces it consistently across every channel.

6. Preventive audits

Finding problems before attackers do

Security is not a one-time setup. Preventive audits look for weaknesses on a schedule, so issues are fixed before they become incidents.

  • Periodic security reviews and vulnerability testing.
  • Traceable records and activity trails that support statutory and internal audit.
  • Follow-up on findings until they are closed.

7. Security alerts

Knowing quickly when something looks wrong

Even well-protected systems need watching. Alerts shorten the time between something unusual happening and someone acting on it.

  • Monitoring for unusual activity, such as repeated failed sign-ins.
  • Notifications to the right people so issues are investigated quickly.
  • Logged events that help review what happened and prevent a repeat.

Questions to ask any retail software provider

Use these before you sign, whichever provider you are considering.

Is it independently tested?

Ask for VAPT evidence, not just a statement that the software is secure.

What if the internet or a server fails?

Check for offline billing at outlets and warehouses, plus replication and backup.

Can I export my data?

Your data should leave with you, in a usable format, if you ever switch.

Will it stand up to an audit?

Look for traceable records and trails that satisfy statutory and internal audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is cloud-based retail software secure?

It can be, when security is built in layers: a secure cloud platform, a hardened operating system and web server, a tested application, strict access control, regular audits and live alerts. No single layer is enough on its own.

Who is responsible for cloud security?

The cloud operator secures the physical data centres and core infrastructure. The software provider secures everything built on top, including the operating system, servers and application. You control who in your business has access.

What happens if the internet or a server fails?

Outlets and warehouses keep billing and moving stock offline, and a replicated standby server with backups limits data loss and downtime.

Can I take my data with me?

Yes. Retail Clouds supports data export and import, so your business data stays yours.

These layers apply to every Retail Clouds service. Explore the parts of the platform they protect, or return to the complete retail software overview.
